I had the pleasure of staying at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay, a hotel that embodies this perfect blend. My room, with its neutral decor and balcony overlooking the water, was a tranquil haven. The Lighthouse Restaurant, with its open-air design, served up delicious Mediterranean cuisine, highlighting the region's fresh seafood and local produce.
Beyond the EU
One of the unique aspects of Montenegro is its status outside the European Union. This means no EES checks, which could be a welcome relief for travelers weary of long airport queues. While Tivat Airport is small, I experienced a brief wait due to unexpected flight arrivals, but the overall process was efficient.

Known as the 'city of a thousand stairs', this hilltop town boasts an abundance of palaces and castles, testaments to its rich history and strategic importance. Several of these castles are open to visitors, offering a glimpse into Montenegro's past.
The Call of the Mountains
The mountains behind Kotor provide a challenging but rewarding experience. After a breath-taking drive, I arrived at the Oblun Eco Resort, a remote yet accessible haven. Here, I was treated to a warm welcome, including a taste of the local grappa, 'rakija', followed by a delicious meal featuring local specialties. Our host, Goran Brnović, emphasized the beauty of Montenegro, a place where you want to stop every few minutes to capture its stunning views.
Skadar Lake: A Natural Paradise
Skadar Lake, the largest in southern Europe, is a protected national park and a birdwatcher's paradise. We explored its vastness, fringed with wetlands, and enjoyed the views of snow-capped mountains. The simple boat ride through the reeds, accompanied by ducks and herons, was a peaceful and memorable experience.
